1. Which state passed a controversial immigration law last spring that is still being challenged in court?

Extra credit: Name one that received some of this money.

8.  What country is the site of a cave-in that has had 33 miners trapped underground for almost three weeks although they are now receiving supplies through a 4-inch-wide tube?
When you finish, go to Wojo's desk to check your answers.

The New York Times is an excellent resource to help you prepare for your weekly quizzes. Of course you can go to http://www.nytimes.com anytime, but as a student in journalism (newspaper, online, yearbook) you also have access to the online e-edition (the print newspaper online):

Type into your Internet Browser:  http://eedition.nytimes.com

At the log in screen, use your Classroom Account Number as Username and Password:

Username: 200278513      Password:   200278513

Then Click on LOG IN.

When you get to the Classroom Subscription screen, click on the newspaper image to launch the E-Edition

You will need to keep these instructions. You can access this from any internet connected computer.

Updates and Instructions for 8.27.10

posted Aug 27, 2010 6:31 AM by Natalie Wojinski   [ updated Aug 27, 2010 7:15 AM ]

It's that time again...time for current events! Yes, we will be doing current events quizzes again this year. You will need to review the major news stories of the week (think political, social, national and international events, environmental, some entertainment, etc.). Take some time to read the news today. Your first quiz is next Friday, September 3. View these helpful hints to prepare:
  • watch the first 10 minutes of the evening news on television. The channel doesn't really matter.
  • read respected news sites online. CNN, NYTimes, and other outlets are acceptable. TMZ is not.
  • Read the New York Times print edition online. Yes, it's the complete paperUse the code 200278513 and log into http://eedition.nytimes.com
  • Stay tuned for information on the SF Chronicle e-edition as well.
Remember to check the spreadsheet for your story assignments. Once you have your assignment, begin your story document discussed yesterday in class. That document should be shared with me well before class ends. You should also have the questions and interviewees sections completed.

Updates and Instructions for 8.26.10 ...and we're back!

posted Aug 26, 2010 6:47 AM by Natalie Wojinski

You will need to check your announcements each day (even if you aren't at school).

Recommendations: Staffers should have earphones that can be plugged into the computer. If you have them, you can watch video news and/or edit our own video news stuff.

In the really goofy department (but it does make you think), view the video on the comparison between the Canon 7D and the Video Barbie.

Equipment checkout contracts are ready. See Wojo if you will need to check out a camera.

Davidson and Christian: You will need to work on your ads plan for this week and next. Leave instructions for Melissa. Also, you will need to recruit more people.

Chloe and Chris: You will need to go through the pitches from A period and get those into the spreadsheet.

For the remainder of this week and next non-staffers will not be in the room at lunch as you finish the last issue of the paper. Furthermore, if you have assignments that are outstanding, you are expected to be in the room at lunch working on your task.

Photographers, make sure images are put in the folder for the issue so page editors don't have to go looking for them. This should be done during class and at lunch, if necessary. Page editors, please check your email for instructions. Plan to be in class at lunch each day to work on your page. Tuesday, when I looked at the Story Assignment spreadsheet, I noticed that several of the stories are not in the editing process. I know that some of you have received emails asking for your stories. We have NO wiggle room on this last deadline. If your story isn't written or through the editing process, you will earn a zero on that assignment. There is no way to make it up. Editors: make sure you are responding to stories for editing in LESS THAN 24 hours.
